BMW E39 5-Series

The BMW E39 5-Series saloon was manufactured between 1995 and 2003. The E39 5-Series base model was fitted with a 520i 2,0L engine which developed 112 kW or 150 Hp and 126 kilowatts or 170 Hp in later model engines. The M5 was introduced in 1998 with a 4.9 litre S62 V8 engine of very similar stature. All models exepting the M5 were available as either a saloon or a station wagon.

Development of the E34's successors began early in 1989 to 1995. The complete vehicle redesign, extracts substantially from the E38 7-Series in body construction and advanced electronics technology. Initially offered only as a saloon car, the wheelbase grew by 68 mm and the overall length of the vehicle increased by a mere 55 mm compared to previous models of the E34 5-Series in design.

The 1996 528i introduced a new M52 in-line six cylinder engine shared with the BMW E36 328i and the 540i which sported a new 4.4 litre M62 V8 shared with the E38 740i. The 2.8 litre DOHC six-cylinder engine produced 141 kilowatts or 190 Hp versus 210 kilowatts 282 Hp for the 4.4 litre DOHC engines. The all-aluminium V8 was a must have vehicle at the time of its inception.

A ZF S5-31 was a 5-speed close-ratio manual transmission that came standard on the 528i, with an optional A4S 310 R four-speed automatic or A5S310Z 5 speed Steptronic which was based on the ZF 5HP18 transmission. A Getrag six-speed manual or the new five-speed A5S 560Z automatic transmission with adaptive transmission control which was available with or without Steptronic option which was the pick for the E39 540i series line up of transmissions.

The E39 mild-all-steel body acts as a complete safety cage for driver and passenger crash protection. Vital key points were double reinforced at crash test mandatory points which increased rigidity of the car without adding to the weight to the vehicle. The aerodynamically designed body of the E39 gave the E39, coefficients of 0.28 and 0.31. Torsional rigidity was also increased over the E34, by 40 percent.

For the first time in a 5 series, utilized rack and pinion steering. This not only offers weight reductions over the re-circulating ball type used on the V8s, but also provides quicker steering response.

The physical size, dimensions, and weight of the V8 engine required the use of the older re-circulating ball steering. This system steers from the back side of the axle. The front sub-frame is steel. To compensate for the heavier front end, BMW used extra aluminium in components including the steering box, steering knuckles, outer strut tube, and the spring pads. The E39 also employs a similar design to the E38 7 Series for the rear suspension as the "Z-link" axle which was first introduced on the BMW Z1.

In 2001, the 528i was discontinued and replaced by the 525i and 530i. The 520i, 523i, 525i and 528i were powered by a 110 kilowatt or 150 Hp engine. The 530i was powered by a 171 kilowatt or 231 Hp inline-six engine. The M54 shared with the E46 330i and the 540i was initially powered by the 210 kilowatt or 282 Hp 4.4 litre M62B44 V8 engine. September 1998, the 540i received the further upgraded VANOS M62TUB44 engine. It produces 220 kW or 290 Hp.
